Six Sigma in Manufacturing
In the late 1980s, Six Sigma was born in the manufacturing world to improve the manufacturing process. During the second half of the 1990s, Six Sigma exploded onto the U.S. business scene as a process improvement and problem solving methodology frequently broken down into five phases: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) Six sigma is more than just the collection of tools. Six Sigma is a data driven business concept. It answers customer demand for high-quality and nearly-perfect business processes. It defines the problem from the customers perspective. It systematically analyses the root causes, and solving it. Most techniques have been time tested, best practices borrowed from many different methodologies, blended to form a unique recipe that could be easily customized to any occasion. Six Sigma Deffect Quantification Higher sigma rankings mean better quality of a product or service, and lower sigma means poorer quality. The measurement is: " defects/ unit ", where the sigma goal is 3.4 defects / million units, or 99.999966 %, in other words, six (6) sigma Deffect is defined as anything outside the customers specs, and can be easily converted to Sigma allowing company wide comparison and performance. Six Sigma Environment Formation and benefits Essential aspects are aggressive goal setting, graphical representation of performance against goals, effective quality management reviews, executive management expectations, standardized measurement systems, and inspiring leadership. Reliance on customer centric metrics coupled with statistical analysis eliminates redundancy found in other quality strategies. If businesses are looking for major business transformation, strategy improvement or a narrowly focused problem solving technique. Companies big or small can yield significant competitive gain by applying and implementing the above mentioned concepts effectively. |
